A week of Yummy Bros, my verdict

A diet should be enjoyable

Yummy Bros was founded in 2018 by Ben Leu, Anson Lim, and Gerald Tan, 3 "gym bros" who believed that meal prep should be about more than just chicken and broccoli. Since starting their business out of an HDB (public housing) in Singapore, they have grown the business to the point where they now deliver healthy meals to tables all across Singapore.

Yummy Bros' mission statement is "to create enjoyable diets for fitness enthusiasts, athletes, and active people", let's see if their meals are as yummy as they claim to be.

What's on offer

Yummy Bros offers 3 food-delivery options, Customisable Meals, which allow you to select your portions and sides, Non-Customisable Meals, and Yummy "Brotein" and "Carbros", which are individual proteins or carbohydrates that you can add to meals you prepare at home. This review will only focus on Customisable Meals.

Unlike most food-delivery companies, Yummy Bros doesn't have a subscription model. Instead, you can order as many meals as you need and they will be delivered all at once. I ordered 5 Customisable Meals, which I would consume over 5 days.

Choosing meals

Yummy Bros has 17 Customisable Meals (all certified Halal) to choose from, of which 4 meals are suitable for those that don't eat meat (I'm a pescatarian).

I ordered all 3 fish meals (Sambal Fish, Zesty Fish, and Thai Pesto Fish) and 1 vegetarian meal (NoMeat Bolognese). I also ordered Fishball Noodles, which ended up being a fish and meat dish—my mistake!

The average cost per meal (after the 10% referral discount) was S$11.61, which includes shipping (S$3.50) and GST (S$4.30). The order total was S$58.04.

Yummy Bros' loyalty programme, YB Reps, allows you to earn reward points every time you place an order, which can be exchanged for discounts on future orders. The maximum redemption per order is $5 (1000 points) and points expire 3 months after they're earned. I couldn't work out the accrual rate, but my order cost S$58.04 and I earned 164 points.

You can get 10% off your first Yummy Bros order using my referral code: YB-ROOTFITNESS. (Min. order of S$30).

Meal delivery

I received my 5 meals in 1 batch 2 days after I placed my order. It arrived on a Wednesday within the time I requested (between 7–10 pm). The meals arrived in a large plastic bag and each meal is served in a plastic container that is microwavable, recyclable, and compostable. While Yummy Bros suggests you store meals in a freezer immediately, I just put them in the coldest part of my fridge and they were fine for <7 days.

My verdict

Yummy Bros is without a doubt one of Singapore's better meal plans I've tried for some time. I would have no hesitation recommending them and I think their meals are good value for money.

The good

Yummy Bros' website is possibly the best I've seen among all the food-delivery companies I've ordered from. Its design makes it easy to use and the depth of meal customisation is impressive. You're able to choose whether you want to receive a regular- or large-sized protein portion, the type of carbohydrate, and which sides (vegetables) you want. All of these customisations are listed with their exact weights.

I was particularly impressed by their calories and macros calculator, which is visible at the bottom of the screen while selecting meals. This dynamically updates with new calories and macros as you customise each meal—this is great for those that are tracking their diet.

Generally, the portions were sizeable and I felt satisfied after eating most of my meals. The calories and macros themselves are good too, with each meal containing >30 g of protein and moderate amounts of carbohydrates and fats. I also applaud Yummy Bros for listing the quantity of sodium (salt) in every meal.

For those of you that are tracking, the average calories and macros for my 5 meals were 473kcal, P41, C56, F12 (Sodium 831 mg).

The price and packaging of Yummy Bros are both great. With an average cost of S$11.61 per meal, Yummy Bros is among the cheapest food-delivery options available in Singapore. The fact that the packaging is easy to clean and fully recyclable/compostable is just icing on the cake.

The bad

The meal variety for a non-meat eater is quite limited with only 4 dishes that do not contain meat. If I'd ordered more than 5 meals, I would have been in a similar (highly repetitive) situation as when I ordered AMGD. If you're a vegetarian, this is not your meal plan.

While Yummy Bros has a fantastic depth of customisation, each of those customisations does come with an additional cost (usually less than or around S$1). If you don't want to increase the cost of each meal, you're left with a fairly limited selection of carbohydrates and sides to choose from.

For example, you will have to pay more if you want a carbohydrate other than "brown and red rice mix" or a side other than broccoli, carrots, or Chinese cabbage. The protein variety for non-meat eaters is also limited with each meal containing fish only featuring a Dory fish fillet.
